May 31 – June 6 Update

Membership Reminder

All riders on every club ride MUST have a paid-up club membership. If you don’t have a membership, your participation NEGATES the ABA insurance coverage of EVERYONE on that ride.

I’ve scanned the recent paid-up membership list, and see some names missing!

Please, you must go to our Karelo account and purchase your membership, even for trial memberships: MEMBERSHIP LINK

For those whose 30-day trial doesn’t work out, you’ll receive a refund minus $30 to cover your ABA insurance for that month. Email club Secretary Dave Watson to begin your refund process: secretary@velocitycyclingclub.ca

Highwood Pass Climbing Weekend

This Saturday and Sunday a decent-sized group will be meeting in Peter Lougheed Park (Kananaskis) to take on the Highwood Pass.

How much snow at the top? We hope to find out.

I’ve posted an itinerary in the Highwood Pass Climbing Weekend Event in our website calendar. Updates will be posted there if we need to make changes. I’ve learned some roads, like the Bow Valley Parkway / HWY 1A, are closed for construction right now. But we should have plenty of other options to test our climbing legs.

Pack clothing for all kinds of weather. Be prepared for whatever the mountains might throw at us.

Paul will host a Saturday night club dinner at his condo accommodations. We’ll share the location details when we ride on Saturday.

Sunday Afternoon Fixed Gear Fun … Fun … Fun!!

Dan, Kevin & Oliver @ the 10-Mile Tuesday event

Great turn-out this past Sunday! The weather was a perfect companion for some laps around the old Argyll Velodrome.

Shaky new track legs found their spin. Older trackies rediscovered their “souplesse.”

We should have more Sunday afternoon sessions like this.

I’ll be looking for more dates this summer. So if you missed out this time, there will be a second chance.

June Club Meeting Is a BBQ

Club President Ed Heacock will host a BBQ at his house on June 18.

Location – 7231-112 St (Ed’s House)
Date – Tuesday June 18
Time – 6:30 BBQ followed by club meeting
What to bring – lawn chair
Who to bring – family members welcome
RSVP by email to heacock@planet.eon.net

Club Weekday Ride Schedule

The club event calendar should be getting posts about each weekday ride plan. Unless cancelled due to weather, the plan all riding season long will be:

  • Monday is Hill Circuit night. Leaving from Hawrelak Park at 6pm. We’ll ride Zoo Hill and the Legislature Grounds.
  • Threshold TT intervals leave from the old Colchester School Site on Thursday at 6pm. Expect about 2hrs riding.

If smoky skies will cause you health problems, please do not ride outside.

Weekend Rides

If you’re staying in town this weekend, you’ll still find club members heading out on the Saturday and Sunday rides.

The Saturday ride leaves from the Olympiette Centre at 10am for a 63km loop.

Please see the Strava Route posted here: https://www.strava.com/routes/19080160

The Sunday morning ride leaves at 10am from the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert. This ride tends to be an intermediate to advanced level ride because of the rolling terrain. We head into the rolling Glory Hills area north of Spruce Grove/Stony Plain.

The final return route plot now avoids Ray Gibbon drive. It takes a short circuit into St. Albert and onto bike paths to get back to the Enjoy Centre.
