June 7 – 13 Update

Masters Road Nationals This Weekend

The club has three members testing themselves against the country at Masters Road Nationals this weekend in Victoria, BC.

If racers didn’t have to focus their riding efforts on racing, they’d have a chance to look up and around at the beautiful locations that host them this weekend!

Friday’s Individual Time Trial traces the waterfront just outside of downtown Victoria. The Saturday Road Race rolls some leg-breaking climbs at the racers on the hilly Metchosin Cycling Classic Circuit. And the Criterium sends competitors circling the BC Legislature grounds back in Victoria.

Send positive energy and good luck to each of these members racing:

  • Colleen Malcolm
  • David Watson
  • Ed Heacock

Flat-out Riding Across the Highwood Pass

13 of us took up the Highwood Pass challenge last weekend. We rode a 114km over-and-back circuit across the 2200m Highwood Pass. All was fine until … we had 5 flat tires! Who would have guessed a road that’s been closed to traffic since December could be such a hazard? It seemed pieces of flint-like rock were the culprits. Only road tubeless riders were affected. We were quickly short of tubes and CO2 cartridges. And with no cell service throughout the pass, and no possibilities for a bail-out pickup (no vehicles allowed until June 15), we were running short on luck.

But luck did not run out. Everyone made it back to the parking lot, where we quickly started talking about doing it again next year.

So, if you missed joining the club on this fantastic weekend of riding, look for another edition in early June next year!

Club Ride Cancellations

Just a reminder, I’ll do my best to post any ride cancellations to our Twitter feed – which also gets echoed onto our Home webpage.

As I’ll be away from the city some days during the season, I’ll be unable to post cancellations every time. Here are the General Cancellation Guidelines to keep in mind:

  • When there is a 60% or greater chance of rain during the ride times (or if it’s already raining … which makes that 100%??).
  • Also, with wildfire season upon us again, if the Air Quality Health Index hits 7 or more, the ride will be cancelled. You can view the AQHI HERE.

Club Weekday Ride Schedule

All rides are posted on the event calendar.

  • Monday is Hill Circuit night. Leaving from Hawrelak Park at 6pm. We’ll ride Zoo Hill and the Legislature Grounds.
  • Threshold TT intervals leave from the old Colchester School Site on Thursday at 6pm. Expect about 2hrs riding.

Weekend Rides

Saturday and Sunday rides continue from the same locations

The Saturday ride leaves from the Olympiette Centre at 10am for a 63km loop.

Please see the Strava Route posted here: https://www.strava.com/routes/19080160

The Sunday morning ride leaves at 10am from the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert. This ride tends to be an intermediate to advanced level ride because of the rolling terrain. Be strong. We head into the rolling Glory Hills area north of Spruce Grove/Stony Plain.

The final return route plot now avoids Ray Gibbon drive. It takes a short circuit into St. Albert and onto bike paths to get back to the Enjoy Centre.

What’s your biggest roadblock?

We can talk about it on a Friday Quick Spin Coaching Call. Just schedule your call HERE: https://calendly.com/epicseasoncoaching/quick-spin-coaching-call

When in doubt … go workout!
