Road Nationals
Big thanks goes out to all club members who stepped up and volunteered to help make the 2022 Canadian Cycling Road Nationals a success for all the racers! Without volunteers like you, this event would have been a disaster … especially considering the urban venue used for almost all of the racing.
The event will return next year, about the same time on the calendar. Please consider keeping those days open to volunteer again. It’s a fantastic way to show your support for our beautiful sport!
Kudos to club member Kim Walter who raced the time trial (in the pouring rain). For those not familiar with Kim, she started her new career as an Emergency Medical Tech this past winter and has a crazy shift schedule. Despite that, she found the drive and determination to race the Elite Women’s Time Trial. Thanks Kim for riding the Velocity kit on the roads of Beaumont!
And if you recall, I was working as an assistant coach/soigneur for the Premier Tech U23 Cycling Team. We had a successful Nationals pretty much all round. Francis Juneau rode into the silver medal of the U23 Individual Time Trial. Carson Miles defended his U23 National Road Championship, and teammate Nicolas Rivard sprinted to silver.
No Hill Circuit Today – Crit Clinic Instead
With the Canada Day Crit just ahead, and our own criterium coming up on July 23, I’m holding a Criterium Clinic tonight, 6:30pm, at the Alberta School for the Deaf (the venue of our criterium).
This will be your chance to practice some general crit racing skills like (frantically) clipping in at the start, sighting and following the best lines through corners on your own and in some small groups.
If it’s pouring rain, the clinic will be cancelled (please monitor our Twitter feed either directly on Twitter, or on our website home page). But if it’s just light rain and/or the pavement is wet, the show will go on. Criteriums never get cancelled because of rain, so it’s still worthwhile to practice cornering with some speed on wet pavement.
Please see more details and register for the clinic on our Event Calendar:
Saturday Club Road Ride
For the next 2 weeks I’m away riding in Penticton for an annual family vacation. But of course your weekly rides will continue. Be kind out there to each other and follow the planned routes. Our insurance coverage requires someone to be a Ride Leader and to take charge if any mishaps happen during a club ride. Please consider raising your hand to be a Ride Leader. I’ll monitor the sign up forms and post our Ride Leaders to Twitter.
This Saturday you’ll meet again at the Olympiette Centre at 10am.
Please see all the Saturday ride details and sign-up at:
Sunday “Rule V” Club Ride
Find and test your “fast” on the Sunday Rule V ride. Meet at the Acheson Truck Stop, west on HWY 16, at 10am.
Details are here:
No Velocity Track Sessions Next 2 Weeks
As I’m away, there will be no Velocity coached track sessions. You are welcome, though, to ride on your own during the velodrome’s Public Drop-In times. The velodrome staff will offer some structured training during the Saturday afternoon time slot at 2:30pm. Please see the Argyll Velodrome website for their calendar details.
Masters July 5 Race Night
Next Tuesday, the Masters will host the Graeme Dibbs Memorial TT, raced as a Team Time Trial on road bikes only.
