Road Nationals Need Volunteers
You can still “participate” in the 2022 Canadian Cycling Road Nationals, even if you aren’t an elite, para or junior racer. Please see this message from the event organizers, as they need more volunteers:
The best cyclists in the nation are COMING!!
Edmonton will soon be hosting the 2022 Canadian Road Cycling Championships, with 4 exciting days of racing at venues in and around our beautiful city. In order to execute a successful event, we need many, many volunteers, primarily to help with course marshalling. If you feel you could contribute a few shifts over the course of the event, we would very much appreciate it!
Here is the link you can use to sign up and then also to choose your shifts: https://app.initlive.com:443/JE/uvqv07bkcbogdp
The basic schedule of races is as follows:
- Thursday, June 23 – Time Trial for Para, Junior, and Elite athletes
Venue: Beaumont, AB and the surrounding area (8:30 am race start) - Saturday, June 25 – Road Race for Para and Junior athletes
Venue: Alberta Legislature grounds, and surrounding area (8:00 am race start) - Sunday, June 26 – Edmonton Urban Fondo, plus the Road Race for Elite Women and Men
Venue: Alberta Legislature grounds, and surrounding area (7:00 am race start) - Monday, June 27 – Criterium for Junior (11:30 am start) and Elite athletes (7:30 pm start)
Venue: Whyte Avenue area, with the Varscona Hotel as headquarters
Please invite all your friends and family to volunteer along with you. Together we can make this a world-class event for our national athletes. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Saturday Club Road Ride
This week we will return to the east side of the city and start from the Ardrossan Rec Centre at 10am.
Remember, this is our no-drop Beginner/Intermediate Endurance Road Ride. Group sizes will be kept to 10 or less. If you really want a hard riding experience, save yourself for our Sunday Rule V Ride (see below).
With June typically being our stormiest month, rides could get cancelled if it’s already raining (actually any time of the year, not just June). They’ll also be cancelled if there are thunderstorm warnings in effect, because lightning is a hazard none of us should endure. I’ll always post ride cancellations (and any other last-minute messages) to our club Twitter account @VelocityBikeAB. If you don’t use Twitter, no worries. Our account feed is echoed right onto our website homepage. You can always find the messages there.
Please see all the Saturday ride details and sign-up at:
Sunday “Rule V” Club Ride
This is a hard and hilly ride. The route is not set in stone. The pace isn’t either. If you want to hammer, this is the ride.
Missed the definition of “Rule V” last week? See “Rule #5” of the Velominati’s Rules >>> on this page <<<
Meet at the Acheson Truck Stop, west on HWY 16, at 10am.
June’s details are here:
Velocity Track Session
Last week got rained out. The painted surfaces on the track become slippery hazards whenever they get wet. If it’s been raining, we need at least 2 hours of dry weather for the track to become safe to ride again. If it’s only been a few drops, then the delay would be much less.
Please use the link below to sign up for these sessions. One sign up for the whole year is good. We just need to make sure we’ve got enough club track bikes on hand to accommodate everyone. The session starts promptly at 5pm every Monday.
See all the details on our Events Calendar:
If you’d like another structured track session, then the velodrome staff now offer a Saturday afternoon drop-in session starting at 2:30pm.
Please review the velodrome calendar in case they make changes to accommodate weather cancellations of other programming earlier in the week: https://www.argyllvelodrome.com/calendar-bookings
EMCC Tuesday Night Racing
This week the Masters event is a Track Session at the Argyll Velodrome. If you’re one of our regular Monday track riders, please have the Velodrome Manager open our storage shed to check-out your usual bike for the evening. (I won’t be available this night.) If you’re not a regular club track rider, then the velodrome staff will have a bike available.
Links to the details are on our Events Calendar:
Wednesday Hill Circuit
Our circuit starts at 6:30pm from Hawrelak Park. Expect about 2 hours of some hard hill riding.
Details and sign-up are here:
Group Riding Clinic Next Saturday
If there’s enough interest, I’ll hold a group riding skills clinic during our regular Saturday ride time slot next week (June 18). Watch for an extra checkbox on next week’s sign up form if you want to participate.
Criterium Clinic Next Sunday
If you plan on racing any criteriums, come take a crack at some high(er) speed cornering drills on June 19. I hope to use the 61 Ave course around The School for the Deaf, which is the same course Velocity will be using to host our own criterium on July 23. Look for details in next week’s update.
BMX Race Weekend
And a final heads up to any members who’d like to go cheer on our BMX racers next weekend.
The Edmonton BMX Track (right next door to the Argyll Velodrome) is hosting a 2-day provincial BMX event. Races happen from 9am-4pm on June 18 & 19. See the Edmonton BMX Association website for more details: https://www.edmontonbmx.com/
