VCC May 4 Update

River Valley Hill Circuit

With the return of warm weather, the weekly Hill Circuit starts this week.

A new day, at least for this first month: Fridays at 6:30pm. This is to keep the club weekday calendar clear on Wednesdays for the Midweek Racing (see below).

Also new this year, we’ll be starting from Emily Murphy Park, as Hawrelak Park is closed for a multi-year rehabilitation project.

Saturday Ride

This week the club ride will head west, with a new start time of 10am.

The ride starts from Edgemont Landing and routes south and then west. If you’ll be racing the Alex Stieda Road Race this month, our ride will cover the course in the CCW direction. Next week we’ll ride it CW – the planned direction for the race itself.

The riding distance bumps up to about 74km this week.

Note, I’ll not be leading the ride this week as I’m teaching another Learn To Race Clinic this Saturday.

All the ride details are on our Event Calendar entry:

Sunday “Rule V” Ride

The club’s weekly “hammer session” starts again this week. It leaves at 10am from the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert, and heads west to the Glory Hills area north of Spruce Grove and Stony Plain.

Don’t know what “Rule V” means? See: The Velominati – Keepers of the Cog

And for the full description of this ride’s own rules, go read about it on the Event Calendar:

Track Sessions Start Next Week

Our track sessions start again next Monday, 5pm, at the Argyll Velodrome. No track bike or previous experience required.

The club has a stable of its own track bikes to help you catch fixed gear fever! Bring your helmet, shoes and own pedals.

This first session will get the bikes and your track legs back into form. New track riders will have a safe introduction to the discipline.

Edmonton Midweek Racing

We’re only short 2 people now to fulfill our Midweek Racing volunteer roster.

The criterium on June 21 needs 1 more person, and the criterium on June 28 needs just 1 more person too.

If you can fill one of these last vacancies, please email me: coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca

And when you’re not volunteering, you should be racing!

This midweek series is a low-stakes way for you to try bike racing or hone your skills as a bike racer. Of course, it should be a great workout opportunity too. The series will be mostly criteriums, with a few time trials thrown in as true tests of your Functional Threshold Power (FTP).

As a Velocity member, you’re good to race, even without a racing license! Just pre-pay your event entry each week on Zone4. All the details and links to the full calendar of events are on our own weekly Event Calendar:

2023 Road Nationals

Road Nationals are here again in Edmonton, June 22 to 27. The event organizer Do North Events needs volunteers to make this a successful week for racers and everyone in the city.

They are looking for volunteers who can assist them with various tasks such as Course Marshalls, Food Services and Timing. Volunteers will receive a uniform for the event, snacks and refreshments and meals depending on shift time, as well as an exciting opportunity to take part in this amazing event.

To volunteer or to inquire about further details, please contact Julia or Aleksandar at volunteer@donorthevents.ca or 780-919-1727.

Jakroo Clothing Orders

For everyone who placed an order, your shipment should be arriving about the middle of May.

The store is closed now until everything has been shipped. It will re-open for ad hoc orders throughout the season.
