Velocity Summer Solstice Season Kick-Off
We’ve planned three activities for this Saturday:
- Club group ride at 10am.
- Summer Solstice Individual Time Trial (ITT) challenge on TWP 520, starting and finishing in front of the Colchester Community Hall.
- Evening online social hour with at-home scavenger hunt.
Show your support for the club and participate in all three if you can!
Club Ride
The plan for the Saturday group ride is to meet at the Ardrossan Rec Centre at 10am for about 62kms of riding that will cover some of our old Ardrossan Stage Race competition circuits.
The ride details are on our website Event Calendar page >>>HERE<<<
You must preregister for the ride by 8:30am on Saturday morning using this form >>>HERE<<<
Summer Solstice ITT Challenge
A 5km Individual Time Trial on TWP 520, beginning and ending at the Colchester Community Hall. If you begin and end near the east entrance to the community hall parking lot, then your time will be captured on this Strava segment >>>HERE<<<
Your choice if you want to ride full-on aero or old-skool Merckx-style.
To capture your ITT performance, you’ll need a Strava account (the free version will work) linked to your GPS cycling computer or using the Strava app on your phone during the ride … But if you have none of these, let me know and I’ll personally time your ride! Just send me an email to coordinate: coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca
How reliable can you pace your effort? Email me your time estimate BEFORE you ride and I might have a prize for whoever gets it closest!
Anyone participating in the Summer Solstice ITT Challenge is participating at their own risk. All participants must abide by all provincial health guidelines, regulations and traffic laws. Participants must take into consideration weather conditions and only ride during hours of daylight.
Social Hour and Scavenger Hunt
Pour yourself your favourite evening beverage. Then, beginning at 8pm, we’ll meet online to share some Velocity club history, and perhaps some of your own riding and racing history with the club too.
In between stories I’ll send you racing through your house – scavenger hunt-style – to find cycling-themed pictures, books, tools, memorabilia, riding kit, and whatever else I can think of. All of it related to cycling in some way.
You’ll get the Zoom link for this social event emailed to you directly, in order to prevent the event being publicly available on our website.
Looking ahead …
If we keep up these vaccination rates, we could be entering Stage 3 of Alberta’s Open for Summer plan in early July. If that’s the case, I will be re-starting our mid-week rides beginning the week of July 19th. And I will get a weekly club track training slot reserved for us too.
Then, the DV100 Gran Fondo in Drayton Valley is waiting for us on September 11. Perhaps some of you will want to field a club team in this event? In the least we should plan for individual entries. Let’s keep talking about this during our club rides.
New River Valley Cycling and Footbridge
The City of Edmonton and Strathcona County are continuing their public presentations and consultations to build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge across the North Saskatchewan River near The Quarry Golf Course. It opens up some exciting new ride routes for those of us trying to reach Strathcona County from the north side of Edmonton.
The next online presentation will be held June 24 at 7pm. Please register for the event on the project webpage >>>HERE<<<
