Final week for placing your Jakroo kit orders
The Jakroo online storefront is only open until Monday April 29.
If you haven’t gone in there yet to order your kit, please do so ASAP. The initial Google Form we asked you to fill out was only a survey. It was not your actual order.
For the lowest kit prices of the year, please go to the storefront now and place your order: http://shop.jakroo.ca/Velocity-Cycling-Club-2019
Remember, if you plan to race even once this season, ABA rules mandate you must wear Velocity’s official kit design. So you’ll need at least a new jersey.
Your order should arrive by May 14, just in time for Velocity’s race weekend, May 19-20.
If racing in the meantime you can still wear the old kit design.
Are you heading to Penticton for the Spring Camp?
If yes, the please bring your passport. We are planning a big ride just south of Osoyoos in Washington State.
Our daily rides start on Sunday, April 28. Leaving 10am from the Tiki Shores Motel parking lot.
Please send me a brief email confirming your attendance: coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca. That way I’ll know who to expect for the rides. Don’t let us depart without you!
Spring Series Returns This Sunday
The last event is on April 28. Lance Adamson still needs volunteers to marshal the event. Without enough volunteers there will be no racing. Please volunteer if you will not be racing.
Sign-up as a volunteer on the Spring Series Signup Sheet [CLICK HERE].
Crits at Castrol Returns Next Tuesday!
This nascent entry-way into bike racing returns this season on April 30. Race on a closed-loop car racing track! No vehicles to worry about. It’s a safe, well-controlled way to either train for racing, or experience your first events.
No race license needed – only an ABA-affiliated club membership (which you have as a Velocity club member). $10 cash payment on-site for entry. Self-seed yourself into A (higher performance), B and C (novice) categories.
Castrol Raceway is in Nisku, just west of Highway 2.
Track 1 (West) circuit hosts these 30min +3laps races:
- 6:40pm Group C
- 7:20pm Women
Track 2 (East) circuit hosts these 45min +3laps races:
- 6:30 Group B
- 7:30 Group A
Stieda Classic is open for registration
The 2-day Stieda Classic, May 11-12, is now taking registrations. This year they’ve re-introduced the 7km gravel section – or as Alex Stieda calls it, “Alberta Pavé.”
Save some cash, and get a discounted entry before the end of the day on May 1.

Highwood Climbing Weekend June 1 & 2
Want to ride the highest altitude public road in Canada? And without any cars to worry about? Maybe there will be elk, mountain sheep or mountain goats to dodge. But no cars. Highwood Pass stays closed to car traffic until June 15.
I’m putting together an itinerary for the weekend. The basic plan is to drive down Friday. Ride Highwood Pass on Saturday. Finish up with a shorter ride on Sunday – perhaps with the climb to Mt. Norquay – before heading home.
Book your own place to stay in the Cochrane/Canmore/Kananaskis area – sooner than later.
Club Weekly Ride Schedule
As decided during last week’s club meeting, here’s what we’ll generally be trying for the 2019 riding season:
- Hill nights on Mondays. More river valley construction will mean further alterations to the loop this season.
- Track League 10miler on Tuesdays.
- Masters club racing on Wednesdays. Take out a discounted second-club affiliation with the Edmonton Masters Club and add a little mid-week racing to your training. For more info, CLICK HERE : EMCC Info Sheet 2019
- Threshold intervals or Track League’s 3-event Night on Thursdays.
- Club weekend rides on Saturday and Sunday.
If you’ve got a favourite route idea, please share it with me coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca
If the weather cooperates, we’ll get our weekday rides underway the week of May 6.
And Register for Track League
As stated above, this year Track League events are split into Tuesday and Thursday races.
Tuesday hosts the 10miler. A simple event of 10miles, with everyone riding in a steady paceline until … someone tries an attack or the pace starts kicking up sometime in the last 20 laps. It’s an easy way to start trying a little bit of track racing – or even just to get a good workout in the smooth paceline.
For the month of May, no times will be kept for the 10miler. Starting in June, the finishing time of that night’s winner will be recorded and tracked across the season. Winners will earn Track League points.
Thursday night Track League races will follow a rotating schedule of 3 races each night. This is the perfect way to learn how to win races – both on the velodrome and on the road!
I encourage all club road racers to at least register for the 10miler night. Your road racing legs will become secret weapons by riding the track! Velocity has a full stable of our own track bikes that we can loan to any club member coming out. So really, you’ve got no excuse not to try. Except of course, if you haven’t taken the prerequisite Learn To Ride Track sessions (a 4-session course on Monday nights) and the follow-up 1-session Learn To Race Track session.
Please complete your Track League Registration Form.
See the proposed Track League Race Calendar.
Register for either the Learn To Ride Track Session or the Learn To Race Track Session by sending an email directly to the Argyll Velodrome manager at: edmdrome@telus.net
Saturday’s Weekend Ride

Don’t let success go to your head, nor let failure go to your heart.
