VCC Update – August 20, 2021

World Triathlon Championship Weekend

Though Velocity isn’t a triathlon club, we have many members who either are triathletes or are interested in cheering on the competitors.

It is a BIG DEAL that Edmonton is hosting the World Triathlon Championships Finals this weekend.

All of the Elite Women and Men are competing on Saturday. If you’ve not going to be joining our club ride, consider heading down to the Hawrelak Park area to cheer on the athletes!

And remember you’ve got your own opportunity to ride/race this weekend too, in the WTCS Urban Cycling Fondo on Sunday morning. Registration is open until midnight Saturday, or until they fill up their 400 participant quota. To date, they’ve only got just over 100 people registered. Go >>>HERE<<< to register yourself on Zone4. See >>>THIS HANDBOOK<<< for all event details (the triathlon and urban fondo).

Saturday Ride from Ardrossan

If you will be heading to the Saturday ride, neither Ed nor I will again be there to lead. So, please consider being a Ride Leader for the club by knowing/downloading the planned route for the day and making sure your group sticks together. Remember to be kind and leave no one behind.

The route is the 72km course that loops north of HWY 16, using the overpass to cross the highway both north and southbound. It includes a final ~6km loop just south of the HWY 16 gas stations before the end in Ardrossan. If you want a longer ride, then consider riding from home to Ardrossan. If you’d like it a bit shorter, then either head straight back on RR 222 when you see it or omit the final 6km loop when you’ve got Ardrossan in your sights.

Here is the route:

Pre-register by 7:30am Saturday morning for the ride >>>HERE<<<

Monday Track Night

Track Night runs from 5 to 7pm.

It’s great seeing Velocity jerseys back riding the velodrome! Let’s keep it going strong this season, so we can be back in even stronger next year.

Please register yourself at: Monday August 23 Track Sign-Up

Tuesday Cyclocross Training

The YEG Cross group has started Tuesday cyclocross training clinics over near the Kinsmen Field House.

Robin Baillie is the lead coach and manages the Facebook group. You’ll need to join that group to get access to this training. Send him your request >>>HERE<<< There may or may not be a fee to join these Tuesday night sessions, but you do need to be a member of an affiliated ABA club – like Velocity!!

Wednesday Hill Circuit Night

Keep mixing it up mid-week with our Wednesday Hill Circuit. If you’ve got ‘cross racing on your mind this fall, this workout is an ideal transition from long steady training into some shorter, choppy efforts. Not exactly ‘cross-style, but it’ll get you part way there.

Register for this ride on the form >>>HERE<<< by noon Wednesday.

Airport Fondo

Reserve Saturday, September 4 for the club-only 2021 edition of the Airport Fondo.

The routes are coming together. The Cessna Fondo will be less than 100km. The 737 Fondo will be somewhere between 110km and 160km. The Jumbo Jet Fondo will be over 200km!!

If the weather gets really foul that day, the fondos will likely be cancelled. Rain in early September can also be coupled with cold temperatures. This is supposed to be an epic day of riding, not and epic day of suffering. Let’s all send happy weather thoughts into the universe for September 4!

Monthly Club Update Zoom Meeting

Our August meeting is next Thursday at 7pm. You’ll get a separate private email with the Zoom link details to join the meeting.

In the meantime, if there’s anything you want to see discussed, please email it to Ed at: president@velocitycyclingclub.ca
