September 7 – 13 Weekly Update

Wondering About Roger’s Harvest Ride?

If you missed our earlier club meetings, we’re unable to continue hosting Roger’s Harvest Ride.

Strathcona County threw too many new and onerous event regulations at us to make it feasible to run the event this year.

We are forever thankful for Roger Tetrault’s contributions to Velocity Cycling Club, and are grateful for all the years of support that he and his wife Laura Tetrault have put into organizing the Harvest Ride.

Planning wheels are still turning to organize a club-level group ride to honour Roger’s memory, and to enjoy the fall colours. We will have more details later in the fall.

Fall Climbing Camp is a GO September 14-16

A group of 5 of us will be heading to Hinton next weekend. We’ll ride both Saturday and Sunday in beautiful Jasper National Park.

Any more riders interested? You’re more than welcome. Just send an email to Coach Kevin so you can be in the loop for the planning: coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca

Everyone is responsible for their own transportation and booking a room in Hinton. As of writing this update, rooms were still available in the Ramada and Holiday Inns.

The plan is a long 110km day on Saturday, riding to Mt. Edith Cavell and Marmot Basin. Sunday will be shorter 65km day, with our sights set on Miette Hot Springs … both as a ride and a post-ride destination.

Stefan Ritter’s Pan Am Championships Crash

Some of you took the Learn To Ride Track course earlier this season, and Stefan was your instructor.

He was back in action last week at the Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Unfortunately he was tangled in a crash and went down heavily at top speed … face first … in his qualifying Keirin heat. He needed critical medical attention.

Stefan arrived home to the Royal Alexandria ICU this week, where he remains in stable condition.

Velocity Cycling Club wishes Stefan a speedy and complete recovery!

Weekly Ride Schedule

The riding continues through the fall. This weekend some of us will be riding the DV-100 in Drayton Valley. That’s no reason to skip the rides if the weather is still great. We had a beautiful fall evening this week for our Tuesday Hill Circuit. But did you know that ride is 30mins earlier now? Leaving at 6pm still gives us enough time to climb the Zoo Hill and Emily Murphy circuit.

Please remember, we use @VelocityBikeAB on Twitter to announce any ride cancellations. You don’t need a Twitter account to find updates. All are re-posted in a feed HERE on our website Home Page.

For now, all weekend departure locations will stay the same. But look for them to change-up later in the month.

Saturday departs from The Grange Save-On-Foods parking lot at 10am.

The Sunday Ride meets at 10am in the Spruce Grove Tri-Lesiure Centre parking lot for the loop north through Glory Hills.

The Tuesday City Hill Circuit meets in Hawrelak Park at 6:00pm for 4x Zoo Hill followed by 4x Emily Murphy.

Test your fitness and CX skills in the Midweek Cyclocross Race at Goldbar Park on Wednesday at 7pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/674829162874735/
