No Midweek Race This Week
The event this week has been moved to next week, June 28. So, our volunteer crew next week will handle things at the Expo Grounds (not the Research Park as originally planned).
If you volunteered to help tomorrow, please consider volunteering to help at our ABA crit coming up in July (see more details below).
If you had already paid to race tomorrow, your entry will be transferred over to next week’s event. Registration closes at 11:59am (just before noon) Wednesday, June 28. Here’s the ZONE 4 Registration Link.
Saturday Club Ride
This week it’s another ride starting from the strip mall in Charlesworth.
Velocity Summertime Crit
Velocity will be part of a weekend of crit racing in July. iGregari hosts on Saturday, July 8. We’ll be hosting on Sunday, July 9. Both races will be using a closed course around the Lynnwood Athletic Field.
We’ll need a good-sized crew of volunteers to make this a great day of racing for everyone! Here’s the link to our Volunteer Signup Sheet. Peter Sherstan is our volunteer coordinator – peter.sherstan@telus.net. If you’re not sure how to help, please send him an email.
Full details about the race are in our Tech Guide
Canadian Road Nationals
If you didn’t notice yet, the Elite/Para/Junior Road National Championships are here again this week!
Friday is filled with Time Trials out on TWP510 – where our club ride took us last Saturday. The Start/Finish is at the 4-way stop where we turned back.
The Road Races for the Para and Juniors are on Saturday in downtown Edmonton. Sunday sees the Urban Fondo for all you non-racers early in the day, followed by the Women and Men’s Elite and U23 Road Races.
All the racing concludes Monday with the Criteriums on Whyte Avenue.
Please see all the details on the host website Do North Events.
Word has it that this year’s “Revelation of the Giro” – Derek Gee – will be here competing in all the events! I’m sure we’ll see him attacking, even in the Time Trial! 😉
I’m helping out a U23 men’s team racing this week. It’s going to keep me busy most days, but I will be trying to get to our Saturday club ride, and the Urban Fondo on Sunday morning. Next Monday’s track session is cancelled because I will be at the criterium – and you should be too. Come watch the action!
L’Etape Edmonton on August 13
L’Etape Edmonton by Tour de France returns this year, departing from Sherwood Park and looping through Strathcona County. Last year they had former Tour de France champion Alberto Contador as their celebrity rider. This time around, it will be “Shut Up Legs!” Jens Voigt!
There will be 3 distance options, plus a Family Ride and Kids Ride.
If you want to enter, our club can be eligible for an overall combined rider general classification and … I’ve got a 20% discount code just for Velocity members who enter! The more that participate, the greater our chances for the club prize. Send me an email to get the code – coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca
This year’s details are on the L’Etape Canada website. Please sign up on their website for more event updates.
Festivus Pedalis – a Celebration of Cycling!
New this year is a gravel event organized by Edmonton’s own Tour de France Legend, Alex Stieda.
Alex is hosting a gravel event (not a race – an unsupported event, at least for this first year) on July 30. Start/Finish is the Strawberry Creek Raceway, southwest of Edmonton. Entry fee is $25 and will be part of a cancer research fundraiser (Alex is a prostate cancer survivor). Please see more details on Alex’s Festivus Pedalis event website.
