Argyll Velodrome Last Lap Celebration

Thursday , August 28

As you all know, we’re moving indoors this fall. And this means the old Argyll Velodrome will be shutting down permanently. Word is the City will be building an artificial turf soccer field in its place. After all, Juventus Soccer are the new managers of the property. The BMX track will be staying put. Whew!

Argyll was built in about 1977 to support Edmonton’s hosting of the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Many Velocity members have raced there over the decades, if not in international events like those Commonwealth Games, the 1983 Summer Universiade Games and the 2005 World Masters Games … but also in our own little Thursday Night Track League.

To recognize the years of fun we’ve all had on the old concrete oval, Argyll is inviting anyone who has ever ridden the Velodrome, but especially anyone who has ridden Track League, to come on out this Thursday evening for a ceremonial “Last Lap.”

Show up for all the fun at 7pm. $5 for a slice of pizza afterwards if you want a snack while you visit with some old track riding friends.

Spread the word to anyone you think will be interested, but is no longer on our Velocity Cycling Club membership roll!

Sunday May 31: Ride cancelled due to rain and high winds.
