Provincial Time Trial Championships Wrap the ABA Road Season
Juventus hosts the Provincial Individual and Team Time Trial Championships this weekend. The course follows a rolling out-and-back near Lake Miquelon Provincial Park. Individual categories compete over a 30km course on Saturday afternoon, August 25. The Team event runs in the morning of August 26, using a double-out-and-back 54km course. Velocity has one team entered in the TTT: Ed Heacock, David Watson, Manny Delos Reyes, and Coach Kevin.
Registration closes Thursday night, August 23. So you’ve still got a few hours to enter.
Vuelta a España Starts Saturday
The Vuelta rolls out on Saturday. We have two Canadians racing this year: Mike Woods (EFD) and Antoine Duchesne (GFC). Here’s a Riders To Watch video from CyclingNews. And here’s Global Cycling Network’s Preview Show on YouTube, with a detailed breakdown of the crazy climbs the Vuelta is famous for throwing at the racers.

Fall Climbing Camp September 14-16
Interested in finishing your road season with a couple of days riding in Jasper National Park?
I’m putting together a camp itinerary for September 14-16. Choose your own accommodations – but I suggest using Hinton as the base, because hotels are a little cheaper there and easier to come by than in Jasper itself. But of course you can stay wherever you’d like. Maybe even camping would work for you.
The idea would be to travel to Hinton on Friday, September 14. Then drive into Jasper on Saturday where we can then ride the Park’s classic roads, including a climb up to Marmot Basin. On Sunday, we could drive up to the top of Miette Hot Springs. Then descend by bike, ride a small loop, and finish with the climb back to Miette. Finally, use the Hot Springs for a soak and clean-up before heading home.
The deadline to express your interest is next Friday, August 31. I’d like to see at least 6 members interested in riding to make this weekend worthwhile. I’ll firm up details with enough riders interested.
Please email Coach Kevin and let me know you’d like to participate! coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca
Want to Help Advance the Science of Fitness?
One of Mike Pinkoski’s colleagues at uAlberta is doing a study of a new sensor system. They are recruiting healthy and fit volunteers. It is a non-invasive test, so no blood draws or muscle biopsies will be done.

Weekly Ride Schedule
As August comes to a close, the riding season’s focus changes to cyclocross. But please look for our weekend road rides to continue as long as the weather holds. The Tuesday Hill Circuit will continue in an abbreviated fashion until sunset eats away most of our evening. The Thursday ride will drop off until next season.
Saturday departs from The Grange Save-On-Foods parking lot at 10am. Head down through Nighthawk and towards Devon. Some of us, including Coach Kevin, will be at the Provincial ITT.
The Sunday Ride meets at 10am in the Spruce Grove Tri-Lesiure Centre parking lot for the loop north through Glory Hills. But Ed, David, Manny and Coach Kevin will be out racing the Provincial TTT.
No Tuesday City Hill Circuit – head out to Castrol Raceway instead for Crits at Castrol.
Test your fitness and CX skills in the season’s first Midweek Cyclocross Race at Goldbar Park on Wednesday at 7pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/674829162874735/
No more Thursday Intervals until next season.
If it is important enough to you, you will find a way. If it is not, you will find an excuse.
