VCC January 20 Update

Club Memberships OPEN!

Everybody wanting to ride in our club’s velodrome sessions needs to get their 2026 membership in order. Your grace period ends next week. If you are riding with us without a club membership (first or second claim) then you’ll invalidate everybody’s ABA insurance coverage for the session.

Please review your membership obligations – like volunteering for our upcoming Casino Event on March 10 & 11 – and enrol in the club via the link on the Membership page:

February Track Session Signups OPEN Now
If you’ve been riding the velodrome already, you should have received a message about renewing your velodrome waivers for the 2026 season. You’ll also need to attach your birth date to your velodrome profile. Beginning January 27, all velodrome session registrants will need to enter via the City of Edmonton front desk. Your profile details need to be in place to coordinate with the City’s front desk check-in system.

Other Velodrome Rules and Etiquette to follow:

  • All participants use the front entrance to enter and exit the building.
  • Please use facility lockers to safely store all personal belongings.
    • Lockers for small valuables (i.e, phone, keys, wallet) are located in the lobby next to the entrance. Leave valuables at home whenever possible
  • If you rent an AVA bike locker, please ensure you have a heavy-duty lock on it and do not leave it open while unattended.
  • General Facility Guidelines:
    • The City is not responsible for personal belongings. AVA customers are welcome to use lockers throughout the facility to secure their belongings.
    • Children under 8 years must be accompanied by a responsible person 15 years or older at all times, within the facility.
    • Children 8 years or older must use the designated change room for their gender, or use the universal change room.
    • The use of recording devices is strictly prohibited in washrooms, change rooms and dressing rooms. Recording devices may be permitted in public areas with staff permission.
    • AVA customers must follow change rooms guidelines and cannot remove their clothing in public areas, including bike lockers and cycling D.
  • Velodrome Guidelines:
    • No spitting allowed on the cycling track or cycling D.
    • No food, including chewing gum, is allowed on the cycling track, including the ramp towards the cycling track.
    • Riding on ramps is strictly prohibited. Bikes must be walked up/down the ramps leading to the infield (from bike lockers) and onto the cycling track.

The club is also looking at extending our Wednesday sessions by 30mins and/or adding an extra weekly session. In th meantime, make sure you renew your February velodrome session registrations (if you haven’t done so yet) here:

Wednesday Open Track Session Reminder
The January 21 session will run as Open Track while Coach Kevin is away for one more week.

Open Track is a core skill every track rider should develop. Track Monitors will provide general direction, but these are not coached sessions.

Open Track Etiquette & Safety

After the initial ~10-minute warm-up:

  • Tempo riding: Blue stayers line
  • Hard efforts: Sprinters lane only
  • Red → Blue zone: Transition area only — do not ride there
  • Recovery:
    • Preferably on the apron
    • If necessary, up on the blue, staying predictable
  • Pace: Riders self-select appropriate groups
  • Passing rule:
Always shoulder-check and call “STICK!” before overtaking up-track and over the right

This structure keeps everyone safe, smooth, and fast.

2026 Casino Fundraiser

We’ve been awarded our next casino fundraiser on March 10 & 11 (a Tuesday & Wednesday). This is our major fundraising event held approximately every 2 years, and is the only way we can fund our velodrome rentals, BMX team programming, race entry fee reimbursements and coaching support. Please check your calendars and find a slot that works best for you on the Volunteer Signup Sheet:

Sunday May 31: Ride cancelled due to rain and high winds.
