VCC October 2 Update

🍂 Roger’s Harvest Ride & BBQ

The Harvest Ride has long been a Velocity Cycling Club fall tradition. It began as the idea of our dear friend and club member, Roger Tetrault, whose love of cycling lives on even after he lost his battle with skin cancer.

In Roger’s spirit of fellowship, we invite all VCC members and their family and friends to join us for a relaxed, social ride. You can choose the trail option at the Waskahegan Staging Area (perfect for cyclocross, gravel, or mountain bikes) or the road option if that’s your preference.

After the ride, stick around for a club-hosted BBQ in the park—always a highlight of the day!

Please sign up in advance so we can plan enough food and supplies for everyone.

Saturday Ride
Head to Ardrossan at 10am for a 63km loop north of HWY 16. Coach Kevin is away this weekend, but you know the drill. Know the route. Designate at least one Ride Leader, but usually two are best so you’re split into fast(er) and steady-eddy paced groups.

Sunday Ride
Arneil will lead the group on the longer Sunday ride, in search of some colourful fall foliage. Meet at Colchester Hall at 10am for about 72kms of riding.

Gearing Up for Fixed Gear Fun
Mark your calendars: Wednesday, October 15 at 8pm is our first weekly indoor session at the brand-new Alberta Velodrome!

We’ll kick things off with Rider Certification. This is the essential first step for anyone wanting to ride the track. Whether you’re a seasoned racer or brand-new, certification is required before joining our weekly sessions or any AVA programs.

Certification is a multi-session course (up to 4 sessions). If you’ve ever thought about trying track, these are the sessions to attend. Miss this block, and you’ll need to complete AVA’s general certification program on your own dime. Velocity’s sessions come at no extra cost to club members, so my goal is to get as many of you as possible certified right away.

If demand is high, we may run another certification block. But your best bet is to jump in now. As a bonus, you’ll also be among the very first riders to experience the Alberta Velodrome on its official opening day!

Next week we’ll share a sign-up form so we can confirm capacity for this first round of sessions. Don’t miss it.

🛫 Airport Fondo – Flying Success!
We had 9 riders follow the 162km 737 Route this past Saturday. One Garmin bike computer went MIA while crossing the bridge leading out of Devon. Warren was contemplating heading back later in his car to search a little more. Any luck, Warren?

Upon inspection, we found the Garmin mount had fractured and that allowed his computer to go sailing off when he rolled over the bridge’s expansion joint. Let’s take that as a cue to check our own bikes this week for anything cracked and/or nearing failure.

Sunday May 31: Ride cancelled due to rain and high winds.
