VCC August 14 Update

URGENT Afterburner Gravel Volunteer Call-Out

Friends, we are still too short on the volunteer roster to run next weekend’s gravel event!!

Your club needs support. The gravel racers need you too. This event is part of the ABA Explore Gravel Series and should see more than 50 people looking to conquer the gravel!

Please help and go sign up here 👉

Brian Countryman Brings Home TWO National Jerseys!
This past weekend, Victoria hosted the Canadian Masters National Road Cycling Championships. And no other than long-time Velocity member – and sometime event announcer – Brian Countryman prevailed in both the Master D Road Race and Time Trial! The Vancouver Island routes throw up some super-steep climbs and Brian powered his way over them all.

Congrats Brian! These wins reward all your years of training and racing!

Saturday Ride
We’ll return to Edgemont Landing at 10am for this week’s 72km circuit. Cafe Aria had some good reviews from our club members last time we met there. So if you’ve got the time, you’ll probably find a few fellow riders to sit down and grab a post-ride coffee there.

I’m away this weekend. Please split yourselves into 2 speed groups. Ride Leaders in each group must have the route downloaded and not leave members behind during the ride. Take extra caution when the groups need to cross Highway 60.

Sunday Gravel Ride
Arneil is on deck again to lead you on a gravel ride Sunday. Get yourself acquainted again with your gravel bike if you’re planning to ride the Afterburner next weekend. Meet at the front door area of Millennium Place at 9am.

Monday Track Night
No Coach Kevin for the Monday track session. If you are an experienced track rider, you can come out and ride some laps on your own. But only if you remember to shoulder check and shout STICK if you must pass anyone. Check in with the clubhouse manager (most weeks it’s been Owen) and he can open our Velocity storage shed if you need to get a bike out.

Tuesday MTB Ride
MTB rides have concluded for the season. Time to start tuning yourself up for cyclocross!

Wednesday Hill Circuit
Even though I’m still away, I encourage you to come out for the Hill Circuit at 6:30pm.

You know the routes we’ve been doing. I’d encourage you to ride the particular circuit we did last time:

  • start in Emily Murphy Park
  • ride up Emily Murphy Hill
  • descend the twisty shared-use trails to the LRT shared-use bridge
  • climb up Fortway Road
  • descend back down to the Royal Glenora Club parking lot
  • head out the back of the Royal Glenora parking lot and up the shared-use trail to Victoria Park Road
  • descend Victoria Park Road, over Groat Road bridge, heading back to Emily Murphy Hill.
  • Pause and re-group at the Faculty Club at the top of Emily Murphy Hill.

There was some construction at the top of Emily Murphy last week, so be prepared to ride the sidewalk up that climb.

Make this loop about 4 times and you’ll be ready to head home!

Sunday May 31: Ride cancelled due to rain and high winds.
