‘Cross Is Back!
In two short weeks, cyclocross season kicks off on the ABA calendar. The opening weekend’s double-header begins right here in Edmonton, with Velocity hosting the Day 2 event on Sunday, September 3. We share the weekend and Strathcona Science Park venue with Pedalhead Road Works.
Jason Redfern is our super-awesome race director again this year – Thanks Jason! As always, events like this rely on more than a strong director. We need a great crew of volunteers too to fill the expectations of every racer who stands on the line that day. Please take a look over our Volunteer Signup Sheet and see where you can lend your helping hands on either the set up day Friday, or our race day Sunday. https://volunteersignup.org/7KLQP
Saturday Club Ride
We’ll meet over on the west side of the city at Edgemont Landing this weekend. We’ll keep this ride on the shorter side so the volunteers and riders who will be heading to Afterburner Gravel on Sunday can stay fresh.
Velocity Afterburner Gravel
With the racing season nearing its end, we’re hoping the long distance endurance crowd will be hitting their afterburners in Alder Flats on Sunday!
We can still use a few hands on-site Sunday to give participants a great and safe experience. The places we need help are:
- Sign-on support
- Feed station help
- On-course 4×4 vehicle support
- Post-event meal set up and take down
Please email Coach Kevin if you can help us out on event day: coaching@velocitycyclingclub.ca
Of course, club members are more than welcome to participate instead! Sure, we’d appreciate your help, but this is also our first foray into hosting a gravel event. Your on-course ride/race experiences will help us learn how we can make this event even better for everyone next year. So please, feel free to enter and ride if that’s a challenge you’re looking for!
MidWeek Racing’s Last Event
Next Wednesday is the last MidWeek road event. It’ll be a fun urban double-header hill climb followed by a social get together at a local brew pub. Watch for sign-up details in the coming days.
Track Provincials
You won’t need to travel far from home for track provincials this year! Next weekend, August 26 and 27, Argyll Velodrome hosts the 2023 Provincial Track Championships.
Anyone who has been participating in the weekly Velocity track sessions should seriously consider entering. Even if you’re not feeling confident with your bunch-racing skills, you’ll be up to the challenge in any of the individual events like the Time Trial (kilo or 500m depending on age and gender), Flying 200m or Individual Pursuit (4km, 3km or 2km, also depending on age and gender).
Check out the Juventus Website for the Tech Guide and Registration Link. Early bird pricing ends on Sunday, August 20. Registration closes completely on Thursday, August 24.
Many of Canada’s future track stars are training right here in Edmonton. If you’re not competing you’ll definitely want to come watch them race. One day you’ll be saying, “I saw them race when …” The action starts 10am on Saturday and 9am Sunday. Download the Tech Guide to see a more detailed schedule.
