Weekly Update: July 10-16

Another hot week looks to be coming up! Just like last week, we’ve moved our Saturday and Sunday ride times to 9am (instead of the usual 10am) to deal with the heat.

Since it’s early July that also means that Coach Michael is off to BC SuperWeek to test his crit skills. Don’t worry, the regular group rides will still go off as planned! You can also follow his results here or by following him on Instagram/Twitter (@mvdhcx).

Monday, July 10: Track Skill Development 

Start Time: 5:00-6:30pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: Monday’s beginner session will be followed by this later session where intermediate riders will be led through a skills and fitness workout. Whether you are a long time road racer or a complete beginner this nightsession not only provides great training, but in an absolute must for anyone hoping to race on the track. Please note that this session is run by the Argyll Velodrome Association and, while we will try our best to keep you updated, the Velocity Cycling Club is not responsible for the cancellations of AVA events.


Monday, July 10:  Track Elite Training 

Start Time: 6:30pm-9:00pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: This training session is open to Velocity members. Riders should have some experience on the track to participate (if you don’t, try Monday’s beginner track night!). As the event is not run by the Velocity Cycling club, please refer to the Argyll Velodrome Association for updates and more information.


Tuesday, July 11: Urban Hills

Come on out for Urban Hills night! Worried that you aren’t fit enough? Well don’t be! Urban Hills is perfect for all levels. After each set of hills (and you can choose to do as many or as few as you’d like) we regroup and ride a nice easy pace to the next climb. 

Start Time: 6:00pm at the Ritchie Market, 6:15 at Cloverdale Hill

Ride Start Location: Ritchie Market at 6:00, Cloverdale Hill at around 6:15. We will end the ride at Rosso Pizzeria and you are more than welcome to stick around for a pizza post-ride!

Thursday, July 13: Sweetspot/Tempo Workout

Come join us for a Sweetspot/Tempo workout that’s sure to get you ready for race season! This week will feature 3 x (approx.) 8-10’ Sweetspot intervals. We’ll regroup after each interval, so don’t worry about how fit (or unfit) you think you are.

Start Time: 6:00pm from Colchester School

Ride Start Location: Colchester School at 6:00pm

Ride Plan: 3×8-10’ (ish) Sweet Spot Workout. Interval #1 is from TWP 514 to TWP 510 on RR 232, Interval #2 is from Highway 21 to RR 220 on TWP 510, Interval #3 is from RR 221 to Highway 21. This week (just like last), bring the last mile of each effort up to your VO2 Max zone (the max you can sustain for 5’).

Thursday, July 13: MTB Ride

Remember to bring a pump, tube, tool, and a bell. For more information, read all about our MTB rides here.

Saturday, July 8-9: ERTC Time Trial and Criterium

Our friends at ERTC are holding a TT and the Provincial Criterium Championships! Be sure to go out and support their race. Tech guide is available here, registration here, and to volunteer click here!

 


Saturday, July 8: Edmonton East Road Ride

A casual group ride. Please be prepared to ride 80-100km at 28-32km/h (in a group). 

Start Location: Starbucks Coffee (Ellerslie and 50th Street)

Start Time: 9am

Details: Road ride at a no-drop pace. If the weather requires, we’ll do some echelon training. There will be a long ride group (99km) and a shorter ride group (56km).

Sunday, July 9: Edmonton West Road Ride

A slightly longer road ride (weather permitting) that will split into two different paced groups partway through plus, we’ll be hitting some road on the other end of the city for some variety!

Start Time: 9am

Start Location: Second Cup in Reverend Square

Details: Plan for 3-3.5 hours. 15-20km into the ride we will split in two groups – from there the “race team” group will head off at a quicker pace while that “fondo” group will follow at a slightly more casual pace.

  • Our Calendar is always up to date, however changing conditions may require a last minute update or cancellation, which will be announced on Twitter. Watch the @VelocityBikeAB Twitter feed for any last minute changes or cancellations. This feed is also shown on the main page of the website.
  • We are insured by the the Alberta Bicycle Association who requires all riders on any scheduled club group ride be a member of the club. Please check out our Membership page for details and to learn about our trial membership.
