Weekly Update: May 15-22

UPDATE: Please note that we have change our ride meeting points this week for both Saturday and Sunday. 

And …. the Velocity Stage Race p/b Velofix is a wrap! A huge, huge, huge thank you to all the volunteers that made this event possible. You can all give yourself a big pat on the back (and check your email later today for the winners of the volunteer draw prizes!) for standing out in the cold rain.

Now that the VSR is done, the Learn to Group Ride Clinics are (finally) here!! We’ve been putting these off for a couple of weeks as we prepared for the Stage Race, but no more excuses. So, if you are new to the sport of cycling and want learn some road riding etiquette and become more comfortable riding in a group, these are the perfect rides for you! They will start at 6:30pm in Hawrelak Park, at the first major picnic area on the right (Site #1) at 6:30. The sessions will cover some basic bike handling skills, Tips and Tricks, and Group Riding Expectations for the first two weeks, and then work on more advanced skills out on the Road later if anyone is interested.  Expect the pace to be relaxed, consistent, and predictable every week.

Remember that Thursday Night Mountain Bike Rides are back in the schedule. They will meet at Giant Edmonton at 6:15pm every Thursday. Please remember to check our club twitter account for ride updates.

And, finally, please note the the Learn to Ride Track Nights have also started. Bernie Fagnan will be instructing the new riders group from 5:00pm to 6:30pm while the track training session starts at 6:30pm. New riders who want to try track are encouraged to join at 5:00pm. Tuesday, May 16: Urban Hills

Come on out for Urban Hills night! Worried that you aren’t fit enough? Well don’t be! Urban Hills is perfect for all levels. After each set of hills (and you can choose to do as many or as few as you’d like) we regroup and ride a nice easy pace to the next climb. 

Start Time: 6:00pm at the Ritchie Market, 6:15 at Cloverdale Hill

Ride Start Location: Ritchie Market at 6:00, Cloverdale Hill at around 6:15. We will end the ride at Rosso Pizzeria and you are more than welcome to stick around for a pizza post-ride!

Tuesday, May 16: Learn to Group Ride

Perfect for new riders who want to learn to ride in a group! The sessions will cover some basic bike handling skills, Tips and Tricks, and Group Riding Expectations for the first two weeks, and then work on more advanced skills out on the Road later if anyone is interested. 

Start Time: 6:30pm

Ride Start Location: Hawrelak Park, Picnic Site #1 (First site on the Right)

Ride Plan: A introductory session covering basic bike skills and etiquette for riding in a group. All levels of riders welcome!

Thursday, May 11: Sweetspot/Tempo Workout

Michael will not be there this week as he’s beeb helping with the Learn to Group Ride Clinics. Come join us for a Sweetspot/Tempo workout that’s sure to get you ready for race season! This week will feature 3 x (approx.) 10’ Sweetspot intervals. We’ll regroup after each interval, so don’t worry about how fit (or unfit) you think you are.

Start Time: 5:00pm from Ritchie Marke, 6:00pm from Colchester School

Ride Start Location: Colchester School at 6:00pm

Ride Plan: 3×8’ (ish) Sweet Spot Workout. Interval #1 is from TWP 514 to TWP 510 on RR 231, Interval #2 is from Highway 21 to RR 221 on TWP 510, Interval #3 is from Highway 824 (RR 222) to Highway 21.

Intervals should be done as a handicap race with the slower riders going off first and the faster riders going off last. There should be 10” between riders.

Thursday, May 11: MTB Ride

The first MTB ride of the season! Remember to bring a pump, tube, tool, and a bell. For more information, read all about our MTB rides here.

Saturday, May 13: Women’s Ride

A casual group ride with the Women’s group!

Start Location: Colchester School at (10am)

Start Time: Colchester.

Details: Road ride at a no-drop, casual pace. This group is perfect for women of any riding level/experience. Please see the Ride Descriptions Page or contact Beth for more about our women’s group.

Saturday, May 20: Velocity Casual Road Ride and Stieda Classic Preview

Update: Please note that we have change our ride meeting points this week!

A casual group ride suitable for all skill levels. This week, one group will split off and pre-ride the Alex Steida Classic Route while another group (those that aren’t interested in riding gravel) will continue on a road (pavement) ride. 

Start Location: Giant Edmonton Cafe (9:00am – FREE COFFEE THIS WEEK ONLY!) or Starbucks Coffee (Ellerslie and 50th Street – 10:00am)

Start Time: Leave at 9am from the new Cafe at Giant Edmonton, 10pm from Colchester.

Details: Road ride at a no-drop pace. If the weather requires, we’ll do some echelon training.

Sunday, May 7: Edmonton West Road Ride

A slightly longer road ride (weather permitting) that will split into two different paced groups partway through plus, we’ll be hitting some road on the other end of the city for some variety!

Start Location: Second Cup in Reverend Square

Start Time: 10am

Details: Plan for 3-3.5 hours. 15-20km into the ride we will split in two groups – from there the “race team” group will head off at a quicker pace while that “fondo” group will follow at a slightly more casual pace.
