Weekly Update: January 30 – February 6

Club Coach, Michael van en Ham, finished up a very muddy Worlds in 38th place.

Thanks to all of our incredible club members, we only have two spots left to fill for our casino fundraiser coming up in mid-February. Both spots are on Thursday, February 16th:

Thu, Feb 16, 630pm-400am: Assistant General Manager
Thu, Feb 16, 630pm-315am: Cashier

More information about both positions can be found on the  Casino Fundraiser page. Meals and snacks are provided during your shift. This is the most important fundraiser we have and it only occurs every 18 months, so if you’re able, please consider signing up for a shift; friends and family can also volunteer on your behalf.  If you have any questions, please our contact our volunteer coordinator, Jessica, at jessica.wyllie@ualberta.ca


It looks like it going to be a nice warm evening of skiing out there at Gold Bar Park!  Remember, if the temperatures are warmer than -5, plan on skate skiing and if they are -6 or cooler, plan on classic skiing! As usual, come out at 7:00pm for a causal hour and a half of skiing that’s suitable for experienced and new skiers.

Remember, if you are interested in getting out (or rather, in) a little more this week, make sure you check (or post) which rides you’ll be doing on Zwift to meet up with other club members. Of course, the  Aerobic Power workouts are also going on strong! If you’ve signed up for these are and are unable to attend, please remember to post these on the swap board so that other members can attend.

Finally, your coach Michael van den Ham just raced the Cyclocross World Championships in Bieles, Luxembourg and finished 38th. He said “Looking back on the race, I think what I achieved was close to to my best possible race on the day. Of course there were a few mistakes here and there, a flat, and a crash on the first lap that cost me, but given the chaotic nature of the course and hearing the stories from other riders, I feel like I came away relatively unscathed!” Michael lis in Europe for one more week and will be racing Maldegem, Lille, and Hoogstraten. Monday, January 30: XC Ski Night!

Start Location: Gold Bar Park 

Start Time: 7:00 – 8:30pm

Details: A Casual XC ski for all levels led by experienced skier and long-time club member, Ed Heacock. Please dress warmly and bring your own equipment! If the temperatures are warmer than -5, we will do a skate ski, if it’s -6 or cooler, we’ll be doing a classic ski.


Wednesday, February 1: Indoor Workout at Aerobic Power

Our weekly indoor training sessions at Aerobic Power. Even though all of the spots for the entire winter are already spoken for, you may still be able to attend by finding a sport on our swap board. Please follow the link for more details. 

Start Location: Aerobic Power (Performance 104 Gym – 7121 104th Street)

Start Time: 7:30 – 9pm

Thursday, February 2: Redbike Faster Paced Fat Bike Ride

Please note that this is not a Velocity Cycling Club ride and while we will do our best to update you on the ride status please refer to RedBike communication for the final say. 

Start Location: Rosso Pizzaria

Start Time: Meet at 6:15pm, leave 6:30pm

Details: A 2 hours fat bike ride through Edmonton’s river valley. This will be a faster paced ride. For the beginner fat bike ride, please attend Monday evening. Please see the Redbike for more details.


Saturday, February 4: Velocity Casual Fatbike (or MTB) Ride

Please note that this ride is open to people who are not Velocity Cycling Club members and, as a result, is not covered under the ABA insurance. By attending this ride, you acknowledge the risk associated. 

Start Location: Wild Earth Bakery at the Zoo (13315 Buena Vista Rd NW)

Start Time: Leave at 10:30 am. Coffee post ride

Details: The purpose of this ride will to offer a non-technical (re: non-singletrack) fatbike ride for those of us who don’t want to ride on technical mountain bike trails. If you don’t have a fat bike, no problem! You are more than welcome to ride your mountain bike on these rides.

  • Our Calendar is always up to date, however changing conditions may require a last minute update or cancellation,.n which will be announced on Twitter. Watch the @VelocityBikeAB Twitter feed for any last minute changes or cancellations. This feed is also shown on the main page of the website.
  • We are insured by the the Alberta Bicycle Association who requires all riders on any scheduled club group ride be a member of the club. Please check out our Membership page for details and to learn about our trial membership.
