Weekly Update: August 8-14

Just like last week #CrossisComing!!! This time around, and in addition to Cyclocross Thursday’s, we’re happy to announce that another Cycle-Smart  ‘Cross Camp is quickly approaching on August 20-21.

In case you didn’t notice, we are also putting a team or two together for the Team Time Trial Provincial Championships on August 28. We already have enough people signed up for one full team, but wouldn’t it be great if we could do two!? We’ll be having a couple of TTT sessions to practice our skills on August 17th and 24th at 6:30pm. Stay posted for more details. On that note, there is also another TTT and ITT weekend fast approaching in Crossfield on August 13th and 14th. We don’t currently have a team for this one, but if you are interested send me an email (vandenham.michael (at) gmail.com)  and I’ll do my best to put one together.

I (Michael) am gone all week to Massachusetts for the Cycle-Smart ‘Cross Camp, but we will do our very best to arrange other ride leaders and keep the twitter ride updates coming in regularly.

Lastly, women’s group! I’m hugely excited to announce that our first women’s group ride will be happening this weekend. All the details aren’t confirmed just get, but they will go out in a separate announcement and be updated here as well!

Day by Day Schedule

Tuesday, August 9:  Track Elite Training 

Start Time: 7:30pm-9:00pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: This training session is open to Velocity members. Riders should have some experience on the track to participate (if you don’t, try Monday’s beginner track night!). As the event is not run by the Velocity Cycling club, please refer to the Argyll Velodrome Association for updates and more information.

Tuesday, August 9: Urban Hills Night 

Start Time: 6:00pm at Velocity, 6:15 at Cloverdale Hill

Ride Start LocationVelocity Cycle at 6:00, Cloverdale Hill at around 6:15. We will end the ride at Rosso Pizzeria and you are more than welcome to stick around for a pizza post-ride!

Thursday, August 11:  Cyclocross Thursday!

Start Time: 6:30pm

Ride Start LocationVelocity Cycle

Ride Plan: (1.5-2 hours) CX Ride geared toward all skill levels! It’ll be an endurance ride on ‘cross bikes through Edmonton’s extensive River Valley trail network. Later in the season, these will also include a CX Skills practice element.

Thursday, August 11: Track League 

Start Time: 6:00pm

LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: Track League! Please note that this is NOT a Velocity Cycling Club event. Please refer to The Argyll Velodrome Association website for all the details. Please note that cancellations for Track events are typically decided decided 5 minutes before the event and events are occasionally postponed rather than cancelled to avoid inclement weather conditions. While we will try our best, the Velocity Cycling Club is not responsible for posting cancellations for AVA events.

Saturday, August 13: Road Endurance Ride

**Our longer route summer endurance rides will start and finish at Velocity Cycle. If those distances look like too much, meet us at Colchester Hall (Not the school!).

Start Time: 9:00am from Velocity Cycle; 10:00am from Colchester Hall (Not the school!)

Ride Plan: 3-3.5 (90-110km) hours steady with a shorter (50-60km, 2-2.5 hour) option available (Starting from Colchester Hall).

UPDATE! Saturday, August 13: Women’s Ride

Start Time: 10:00am from the Strathcona Olympiette Centre

Ride Plan: All levels of riders welcome! There will be a strict no drop policy.  Rides will be 40-60km in length, depending on who attends and how everyone feels that day

Sunday, August 14: Road Endurance Ride

**Please note that Michael will not be there**

Start Time: 10:00am

Ride Start Location:  Second Cup at Riverbend Square

Ride Plan: 3-3.5 (105km) hours steady with a shorter (62km, 2-2.5 hour) option available. While we will keep the pace steady on most of the route, there will be a couple opportunities to stretch your legs (or go for some KOM’s!) at designated points throughout the ride.

Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14: Crossfield ITT and TTT

Another ITT and TT weekend. We don’t currently have a team for this one, but if you are interested please send me an email to  vandenham.michael (at) gmail.com and I’ll try to put one together for you.

  • Our Calendar is always up to date, however changing conditions may require a last minute update or cancellation which will be announced on Twitter. Watch the @VelocityBikeAB Twitter feed for any last minute changes or cancellations. This feed is also shown on the main page of the website.
  • We are insured by the the Alberta Bicycle Association who requires all riders on any scheduled club group ride be a member of the club. Please check out our Membership page for details and to learn about our trial membership.
