Weekly Update: June 27 – July 3

I think I can speak for everyone and say that we had a great time in Canmore for the Rundle Mountain Road Festival (RMRF)! Not to mention the club had some great results. Terra won the Hillclimb and the Overall Omnium, Shane earned 2nd in the Cat 3 Road Race, Curtis was 5th in the Cat 3 criterium, and Mark was 9th in the Cat 1/2 Road Race. On top of that, Mike finished his first ever stage race in Cat 5 and Micah rode in the break for almost the entire Cat 1/2 road race only to be caught on the last lap. And a different note, Rejean had the misfortunate of crashing on the last lap of the Cat 3 crit and ended up with a broken collarbone. We’re all wishing you a speedy recovery  Rej!

After getting rained out last week, we have another Mountain Bike Skills and Drills clinic tomorrow! This time it’ll start at Voyageur Park (The Bike Park) in Devon.  These basic mountain bike skills clinics lead by Janet Liu are perfect for building the skills you need to hit the trails. They’ll be happening every Tuesday for the next three weeks, so be sure to check them out. Plus, they’re open to both men and women this year!

On the weekly ride front, everything is as usual until Thursday when I’m again throwing our normal TT/Tempo ride out and putting in a Coffee Shop Cruise given that we have 3 races in 3 days coming up this weekend. Monday, June 27: Beginner Track Night

Start Time: 5:30pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: The perfect opportunity to try riding the track, no matter how inexperienced you are! Velocity Track Coach, Randy Murchison is second to none at helping new track riders get comfortable on the velodrome. Don’t have a track bike? No problem! Velocity has plenty of beautiful Marinoni track bikes for their members to borrow, just remember to bring your shoes, pedals, and helmet.


Monday, June 27: Track Skill Development 

Start Time: 6:30pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: Monday’s beginner session will be followed by this later session where intermediate riders will be led through a skills and fitness workout. Whether you are a long time road racer or a complete beginner this nightsession not only provides great training, but in an absolute must for anyone hoping to race on the track. Please note that this session is run by the Argyll Velodrome Association and, while we will try our best to keep you updated, the Velocity Cycling Club is not responsible for the cancellations of AVA events.


Tuesday, June 28:  Track Elite Training 

Start Time: 7:30pm-9:00pm

Ride Start LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: This training session is open to Velocity members. Riders should have some experience on the track to participate (if you don’t, try Monday’s beginner track night!). As the event is not run by the Velocity Cycling club, please refer to the Argyll Velodrome Association for updates and more information.


Tuesday, June 28:  Mountain Bike Skills and Drills

Start Time: 6:30pm-9:00pm

Ride Start Location: Voyageur Park (The Bike Park) in Devon

Ride Plan:  This beginner skills clinic is open to people of all skill levels! The ride will leave Velocity and head Argyll Park/Mill Creek Ravine and work on slow speed skills like tight turns, switchbacks, track stands and wheel lifts.Next week it will meet at 6:30pm at the Bike Park in Devon to work on high speed skills such as drops, high speed corners, and jumps. Participants just need to bring themselves (ready to ride), their bike, water and some bug spray.


Tuesday, June 29: Urban Hills Night 

Start Time: 6:00pm for ride start.

Ride Start LocationDa Capo Caffe on Whyte. Come 15 minutes early if you want to enjoy a coffee or snack before we head out. We will end the ride at Rosso Pizzeria and you are more than welcome to stick around for a pizza post-ride!

Thursday, June 31: MTB Group Ride

Start Time: 6:30pm

Ride Start LocationVelocity Cycle

Ride Plan: (1.5-2 hours) MTB Ride geared toward intermediate riders (check here for more information).


Thursday, June 31: Track League 

Start Time: 6:00pm

LocationArgyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: Track League! Please note that this is NOT a Velocity Cycling Club event. Please refer to The Argyll Velodrome Association website for all the details. Please note that cancellations for Track events are typically decided decided 5 minutes before the event and events are occasionally postponed rather than cancelled to avoid inclement weather conditions. While we will try our best, the Velocity Cycling Club is not responsible for posting cancellations for AVA events.


Thursday, June 31: Coffee Shop Cruise

Start Time: 6:00pm (coffee), 6:15 (ride)

Ride Start LocationDa Capo Caffe

Ride Plan: With the 3 races in 3 days on July 1, 2, and 3rd chances are you don’t want to be doing any hard TT intervals! With that in mind, we’ve replaced our regular TT night with a casual cruise in the River Valley. The ride will be about an hour long and open to riders of all levels. Come at 6:00 for coffee or 6:15 for the start of the ride!

Friday, July 1: Canada Day Criterium

Criterium Provincials are once again the Canada Day Criterium! For full details see the Juventus Cycling Club’s Website. Remember that registration closes June 28th at 11pm.


Saturday July 2: PRW Road Race

A new race held around Miquelon Lake Provincial Park! For all the details, see the Tech Guide.

 


Saturday, July 2: Road Endurance Ride

**Our longer route summer endurance rides will start and finish at Velocity Cycle. If those distances look like too much, meet us at Colchester Hall (Not the school!). Please note that Michael will not be there.**

Start Time: 9:00am from Velocity Cycle; 10:00am from Colchester Hall (Not the school!)

Ride Plan: 3-3.5 (90-110km) hours steady with a shorter (50-60km, 2-2.5 hour) option available (Starting from Colchester Hall).

Sunday, July 3: Rivedale Criterium 

Another new race! This one a Criterium and held in the Riverdale Neighbourhood (where we do hill repeats every Tuesday!). Don’t worry, the course doesn’t go up Cameron Avenue! See the Tech Guide for all the details.


Sunday, June 26: Road Endurance Ride

**Please note that Michael will not be there.**

Start Time: 10:00am

Ride Start Location:  Second Cup at Riverbend Square

Ride Plan: 3-3.5 (105km) hours steady with a shorter (62km, 2-2.5 hour) option available. While we will keep the pace steady on most of the route, there will be a couple opportunities to stretch your legs (or go for some KOM’s!) at designated points throughout the ride.
