MTB Rides Begin this week!

Now that May is nearly upon us, this week brings the start of the Mountain Bike Rides and the first Track session this year! The MTB rides will be leaving from Velocity Cycle on Thursdays while Sunday brings a Track session geared towards brand new riders at the Velodrome. Also note that the Learn to Ride Road clinics are moving to Colchester School.

Again, there will be no Sunday Road Ride because of the Spring Series races. If you haven’t already, please consider volunteering. Volunteers receive entry to the next race for free! On that note, we are also still looking for volunteers for the Velocity Stage Race. Check the Volunteer page for all the details.


Tuesday, April 12: Urban Hills Night 

Start Time: 6:00pm

Ride Start LocationDa Capo Caffe on Whyte. Come 10 minutes early if you want to enjoy a coffee or snack before we head out!

Ride Plan: 1.5-2 hour ride with a numerous 0:45-1 minute intervals up some of Edmonton’s most gruelling hills. Urban Hills night is the perfect ride for cyclists of all levels – the number of intervals we do is completely up to you and the pace between hills will be comfortable for riders of all levels.

Wednesday, April 27: Learn to Ride Road Clinic 

Start Time: 6:30pm

Ride Start Location: Colchester School

Ride Plan: This ride is the perfect opportunity for riders of all levels to become more comfortable on their road bikes! In this skills clinic, coach Bernie Fagnan will teach basic bike handling skills and terminologies, rider etiquette, types of pacelines, and some tips and tricks on how to ride safely. If you are a member of the club, but don’t have a road bike, don’t despair – Velocity Cycling Club has bikes to use! Check with our equipment manager, Oliver Walls, to book yours.


Thursday, April 28: Road TT/Sweet Spot Workout 

Start Time: 6:00pm

Ride Start LocationColchester School

Ride Plan: 1.5-2 hour ride with 2-3 10-15′ threshold efforts. If you have one, bring your time trial bike! Every second week we will do individual threshold/tempo efforts that will be perfect for logging some miles on your time trial bike. Don’t have a TT bike? Don’t worry, this is a great effort to do on the road bike as well!.

Thursday, April 28: MTB Group Ride

Start Time: 6:00pm UPDATE: 6:30pm

Ride Start Location: Velocity Cycle

Ride Plan: 2-3 hour (UPDATE: 1.5-2 hours) MTB Ride geared toward intermediate riders (check here for more information) through Edmonton’s beautiful River Valley. It is always a good idea to bring a card or some cash for the unexpected and remember, you’ll need to be have enough food, your flat repair kit, a bell (it’s the law in Edmonton!), and a helmet.

Saturday, April 30: Casual Ride

Start Time: 10:00am

Ride Start Location: Colchester School

Ride Plan: Do those 60 and 100km routes look like a little more than you want to be doing? Whether you are looking to do a little less distance than the endurance rides, are on a recovery ride, or are a newer rider, these 30-50km instructional rides are perfect for you to log some miles!

Saturday, April 30: Road Endurance Ride

Start Time: 10:00am

Ride Start Location: Colchester School

Ride Plan: 3-3.5 (110km) hours steady with a shorter (67km, 2-2.5 hour) option available.  This is an endurance ride, so the pace will be steady. Not sure if this is the right ride for you? Please see club rides page for more information.

Sunday, May 1: Track New Riders Day 

Start Time: 1:00pm

Ride Start Location: Argyll Velodrome

Ride Plan: Are you a first time Track rider hoping to learn the ropes? If so, this is the perfect ride for you! Coach Randy Murchison will teach some must know track skills to get you going for the season. Velocity Cycling Club has lots of fantastic Marinoni bikes for its members to use, but please remember to bring your bring your own pedals, shoes, kit, and helmet.

Sunday, May 1: Spring Series Race #2

The Spring Series races are a great opportunity to test out your fitness, give racing a try, and have fun. For all the details please see the race flyer.

Please note that this means that we will not be having our Sunday Group rides for the next few weeks. However, you are strongly encouraged to ride out to the race and we will meet at Colchester School at 12:15pm if you want to ride out with the club.

Not interested in racing? The Spring Series is still looking for volunteers. While not hosted by our club, it’s still a great chance to give back to the cycling community.  Remember, no volunteers, no races! You can sign up here.


Notes

  • Our Calendar is always up to date, however changing conditions may require a last minute update or cancellation which will be announced on Twitter. Watch the @VelocityBikeAB Twitter feed for any last minute changes or cancellations. This feed is also shown on the main page of the website.
  • We are insured by the the Alberta Bicycle Association who requires all riders on any scheduled club group ride be a member of the club. Please check out our Membership page for details and to learn about our trial membership.
